09/13/25 Peach West Relocated Chicken 63mi Gravel Ride

Yesterday five of us had a hot and dry adventure on the Peach West Relocated Chicken 63 mile route. This past week I reconnected with a long lost buddy of many epic adventures that I hadn’t heard from in several years. Mike joined Merrill, Rox, Rick and myself for a choppy, soft sojourn through the south Chilton county sand roads.

These roads are amazing when it’s rained at least once in the past several weeks, but this ride was full of graded soft sand and rocks that had not been exposed for a good while. There are not a lot of big climbs on this route, but there is one very gradual 3 mile long climb after the second water stop at the school that was quite the attitude adjustment.

All things considered, we had a great crew for comic relief. All spirits were high except for mine towards then end. I had a pretty strong mtb ride Tuesday night, and 3/4 of the way through the ride yesterday I was dying. I thought it was the sun at first, but my shoulders really started cussing me, and that’s when I realized that it was not getting enough rest after that mtb ride. This was the point that Merrill explained the concept of active recovery to me. Speaking of which, I’m gonna go do that right now.
